I knew friday night was going to be the beginning of a beautiful night when I was approached by the lovely jemina pearl and asked in a lady like tone, “Are you in line for the fucking toilet?”
I must say, I was VERY shocked when she approached me, I mean DEAR GOD. IT WAS FUCKING JEMINA PEARL. Now many of you may or may not have heard of this young lady but trust me once you meet and listen to this pint-sized blond bad ass you know that you will never forget her. But I digress.
After waiting for my buddy to leave the restroom I retreated to the stage in which Pearl’s band was setting up. Fortunately I was able to get relatively close which I didn't understand at first, I mean cmon’ Jemina Pearl was about to perform!
Thats when a young Lad about my age leaned over and said,
“Hey have you ever heard of this Jem-EYE-nah pearl girl?”
I was shocked. Have I heard of this Jem-ee-nah pearl character? Why yes I have before, and after a few minutes this boy would too. And he would NEVER forget who Jemina Pearl was. But I do have to admit I was discouraged by this boy not knowing of her.
Eventually the band took the stage in the form of Jemina Pearl on vox, John on lead, Maxwell on rhythm, Ben on bass, and Erik on drums.
Jemina wore tight dark blue skinny jeans rolled up to show off a pair of what looked like vintage motorcycle boots with rhyme stones and a wife beater showing a lace black bra. She definitely embodied the early Patti Smith.

They opened up with “after hours,” and within minutes I new instantly that this band was definitely worth seeing live. Jemina had the stage presence like no other.
She had a way of moving in perfect sync with her music and knowing exactly when to snarl, when to shimmy, and when to tell people off.
You could really tell the band was having a good time the way Pearl interacted with all the bandmates like it was any other jam sesh.
Throughout the set she made amusing comments about bass player, “Ladies he’s single and ready to mingle... He likes to wear american appearel jeans... his favorite beer is miller light...he likes long runs in the park... oh yeah he came out of the closet last week.” This added to the overall vibe of "this woman is completely insane and I want to be her."
By the third song a small group of girls had thought the same thing and had congregated to the front and were imitating her dance moves, which reminded me of American Bandstand infused with something from the Peanut Characters.
This group of girls were so enamored with Pearl that they cheered when she grabbed their bags and tossed aside yelling “who said you can put your bags here!” then continued to read a girls journal aloud.
Basically Pearl was the girl you both feared and wanted to be at the same time. That's when I realized a lot of the crowd was not as pleased as I was and the four other girls in the front with Pearl. In fact I noticed a large majority of the show goers were older hipster types completely taken aback by Pearl’s demeanor.
Then I began connecting the dots. Island’s was the opening band, (formerly the Unicorns), I’ve heard a few Island songs but not much but from what I’ve heard they were not the Jemina Pearl supporting band.
When Islands finally entered the stage, the singer was wearing an elvis like cape and the lenses you get after having an eye exam.
Once the music began he started doing a great job interpretive dance of extraterrestrial life.
By the fourth song I realized why the Island fans were taken aback.
By the fifth song I couldn’t handle it anymore. I left to see if I could catch a few words with the band, which I did.

Craptastic phone pictures!

In the end of it all, this was an Islands show. However after Pearl and her band left the stage and Islands went on it felt very much like an “Are You Randy” moment.
